Yearly Cleaning Guide

A few weeks ago, I shared with you my weekly cleaning schedule (complete with a free printable!) and today I am SO excited to talk to you about my Yearly Cleaning Guide! This guide goes hand in hand with my rotational cleaning schedule. It is perfect for those tasks you just don’t need to do very often.

Psst… Be sure to save this post so that you can refer back to it later. I’ve included a special offer at the bottom of this post, so don’t miss it!

Today I’ll be sharing how to break down those tasks that are too big to be completed each week, but are still so important to managing your household well.

Some of these tasks are seasonal, meaning they may not be relevant at certain times of the year (it’s not likely you’ll be clearing icicles in July!). Others are based on frequency of use or necessity.

I love keeping these checklists handy because they keep me organized even when I am overwhelmed.

Monthly

These are tasks that need to be done regularly, but don’t quite fit into one category of cleaning or a specific room.

  • Test smoke detectors

This means pressing the test button on each smoke detector in your house. Fire safety is no joke, and I make sure to keep all of the alarms working in my house at all times.

  • Dust ceiling vents/air returns

You’ll most likely have to get a ladder out to reach all of the ceiling vents in your home, which is why it is relegated to once per month.

  • Walk the exterior of your property

Check for cracks in your siding, leaks, debris on your roof, or anything that could be potentially hazardous. It only takes two minutes, and you can do it while the kiddos are playing in the backyard.

Quarterly

Quarterly means every three months, but these tasks do not all have to be done the same month. Spread them out to ease the burden.

  • Change Air Filters
  • Vacuum dryer vent
  • Wash shower curtains and liners
  • Deep clean garbage disposal
  • Inspect/replace fire extinguishers
  • Remove shower heads and clean sediment build up
  • Check floor vents for debris build up (or lost toys!)

Biannually

These tasks are completed twice per year.

  • Change smoke detector batteries
  • Clean the gutters
  • Clean behind major appliances
  • Deep clean garage fridge/freezer
  • Clean and organize shed
  • Check all windows and door locks for broken or malfunctioning parts
  • Check faucets/plumbing for leaks and clean sediment build up on faucets

Yearly

These tasks are easy to forget because they happen so rarely, but that makes them extra important to take care of!

  • Clean chimney/flue

Unless you are using your fireplace year-round, you really shouldn’t have to clean it more than occasionally. If you do, it can become a biannual task.

  • Deep clean garage

Really get in there and discard those items that just keep piling up. Put away summer toys in the fall and winter supplies in the spring. Sweep out the dirt that has accumulated and organize the shelves.

Seasonally

These are tasks that may need to be done monthly but only for a season, or twice a year.

  • Clear icicles off of house
  • Check A/C and have it serviced
  • Flush hot water heater/remove sediment
  • Winterize a/c unit and outdoor spigots
  • Check driveway/pavement for cracks
  • Clean patio furniture
  • Pull in season clothing out of storage
  • Move out of season clothing into storage

Combine this yearly cleaning schedule with my weekly cleaning schedule and your home will be well on its way to sparkling!
