15 Family Friendly Fall Activities for Toddlers

The Fall Season is in full swing over at the Nesting Domestic household! Autumn is both mine and my husband’s favorite season. Cooler weather, crisp air, bonfires, flannel, and let’s not get started on the food. I am forever here for anything cinnamon, pumpkin, or maple flavored. Bring it on!

With the changes in weather, you may be looking for activities to do with your little one. Today I’m sharing 15 of my favorite family friendly Fall activities. Whether you’ve got toddlers or big kids, they are sure to have a blast with these activities! Check out my Instagram where I share frugal family fun tips each Friday!

Hiking

Autumn is the perfect time to get your hike on. Whether you live near the mountains, or like to keep your outdoor activities closer to civilization, fresh air is great for everyone. We love hiking as a family and exploring. Plus Fall is unarguably the best season for foliage peeping.

Pumpkin Patch

What screams ‘Fall is Here!’ more than visiting a pumpkin patch? Let the kiddos pick out their own and decorate your front porch together! This family friendly Fall activity is sure to provide wonderful memories for the whole family.

Pumpkin Carving

After you’ve used them as decorations, it is time to carve your pumpkins. If you buy a few pumpkins in September, you can make them last through November with a little ingenuity. Once bought, decorate your front porch. During the second or third week of october, carve your jack o’lanterns for Halloween. You can spray a bleach and water mixture on the inside to make your pumpkins keep a little longer. Once the holiday is over, spin them around so that the carving faces inward, towards your house. This leaves the uncarved side of the pumpkin displayed for the rest of fall.

Making Halloween Costumes

This activity might be better suited for older children, but we know that toddlers LOVE to be involved, so let them help! It may take longer, but the memories made are totally worth it. Plus, how adorable will the pictures be to look back on?

Fall Festivals & Parades

Parades and festivals are perfect for families. There are so many things to see and do. Get your faces painted, wave at the fire engines in a parade, eat tons of fried food, win a prize! There is something about running around a festival in slightly nippy weather that makes my autumn-loving heart so happy.

Leaf Piles – Raking leaves may not sound fun but jumping into them sure does! What is a more quintessentially FALL activity than that?

Corn Mazes

Get lost as a family in a corn maze! The kiddos are sure to love trying to work their way through the puzzle. Plus, you get to be out in the fresh air. Win-win!

Petting Zoo

Zoos aren’t just for summer time! Visit a local petting zoo and have a blast feeding the animals. This family friendly Fall activity can be educational as well. Practice making animal sounds and guessing about what you might see on the drive over.

Hay Rides

I sure do love a Fall hayride! Many agri-tourism companies run specials that include hayrides and pumpkin picking together. Check your local area to see what is available.

Apple Picking

Apple picking sounds like the cutest family outing! This family friendly Fall activity is great because not only do you have the chance to spend quality time together, but you get to bring home yummy apples! There are so many ways to enjoy a crisp apple. My toddler loves them dices and cooked in cinnamon and sugar.

Bake Cookies & Brew Apple Cider

Did I mention that I love cinnamon? So when the weather cools down, snickerdoodles are a must. And it pairs oh so perfectly with hot apple cider. There are tons of recipes online, or you can try to create a recipe together. Not a family of cooks? Buy some ready-made cider and cookies from the store and spend time together while enjoying them!

Fall Decorating

Get the whole family involved with decorating! Instead of just putting up decor and calling it a day, make some together! This can be making a wreath out of leaves and foliage from your yard, or making spooky halloween decorations. Whatever your family’s style, be sure to do so together!

Make a Bird Feeder

As the weather changes, many animals’ food supply dips. Create a simple bird feeder with some peanut butter and birdseed to keep your winged neighbors happy. You kiddos will love working on this craft together, and even more excited to watch birds come and go.

Go to a Football Game

Whether it is pro, collegiate, or your local high school team, football games scream Fall in the US. Get in the competitive spirit with this family friendly Fall activity.

Plant a Fall Garden

Many plants can still grow as the weather cools down. Spinach, kale, onions, potatoes, broccoli and peas are all great options. Plant in August or early September to give the plants enough time to grow.
