12 Hobbies for Stay at Home Moms
Stay at home moms are busy, there’s no arguing about that. But they also need time to themselves. Many moms find the activities that they used to do are no longer appealing after kids. Others simply cannot dedicate the time to former hobbies. So what kind of hobbies can you do when you’re with littles all day long? I’m so glad you asked!
Today I’m sharing a list of hobbies for stay at home moms. Many of these hobbies can be started, put down, and picked right back up again if you are interrupted. Others are hobbies you can include your children in.
Why Do Moms Need Hobbies?
Moms give so much of themselves, that they can become a bit consumed by their identity as a mother. When you spend your entire day doing for other people, it can be easy to do things for yourself.
Hobbies for stay at home moms are a way for you to keep a piece of yourself to yourself. To remind you of your identity outside of Mother or Wife or Friend. It is a totally acceptable way to be just a little bit selfish with your desires. I fully believe I am able to be a better mother and wife when I have had some time to myself to decompress and let my mind wander away from my job.
How to Find Time for Hobbies
Like I said above, moms are busy. That means that time is precious and finding time for hobbies can be difficult.
I carve out time for myself during naptime, after my toddler’s bedtime, and I trade off free time on the weekends with my husband so that we can both have a break.

Gardening
I absolutely love gardening when the weather gets warm. Eating food that I grew makes me feel powerful in an Earth Goddess kind of way. Keep in mind that my gardening skills are not to self-sufficiency levels, and I definitely rely on the grocery store. Here are some ways to save money on groceries.
This is a hobby that you can (and should!) absolutely include your toddler in. We grew potatoes and flowers last year, and my son was so excited to dig up our spoils!
DIY & Crafting
Are you handy with a drill? Consider fixing things up around the house. Alternatively, go antiquing and restore furniture that has seen better days. A family friend is an absolutely amazing scrapbook artist. She hand makes her Christmas cards each year and they. are. STUNNING. This is a great way to involve your kiddos in crafts as well.
Reading
I am a HUGE reader. My Kindle app clocked me in at 40 books read in 2024, and my goal for 2025 is to beat that number! You can get a device like this one, stay classic with a physical book or, download them on the app from your local library. Stay tuned for a post on my favorite books for busy moms.
Knitting
A friend of mine likes to knit because it is a great task to keep your hands busy and your mind free. Plus, you can put it down and pick it right back up without much difficulty. She even knitted a baby blanket for her son!
Baking
I really love creating sweets for family and friends. It is something my toddler can be involved with and I get to create, so it is a double win. You can also get started on the sourdough trend! There are some great books to get you started.

I might be biased because, well, you are currently reading this on a blog, but I think blogging is a fantastic hobby for moms! It allows me to be creative. How cool would it be to teach your child to be bilingual?!? I am currently trying to teach myself German, and it is such a cool language. You can start learning with very little commitment as far as money or equipment.
There are apps like duolingo, Mango, or Drops that give you the option to set a time limit. Make a cup of tea, put the kiddo in the playroom for fifteen minutes, and dedicate some time to working your brain.

Build a table or wood burn a design. I got a kit like this one a few years ago and it has served me well. This is a hobby that requires concentration, and is best done without little one’s fingers around, so keep that in mind.
