How to Prepare for a Power Outage With Kids
How to Prepare for a Power Outage With Kids with an Emergency Kid Kit
Power outages are not fun. We recently had a bout of storms that left us without power for short periods on multiple days.
You’re stuck in the dark with no clue when power will return. You can’t open the fridge, and are probably worried about your food spoiling. Add in squirrelly children who don’t really understand what’s going on and it can be ultra stressful for parents.
But I’ve found a way to keep kiddo’s entertained when the power is out. Enter: the Emergency Kid Kit.
What is an Emergency Kid Kit?
An emergency kid kit is exactly what it sounds like. A kit to be used in case of emergencies. It is for situations when you need to focus on the unexpected and still keep your kiddos occupied. I suggest having one for each child in your house.

First Aid
We got this first aid kit and keep it stocked at all times.
Food & Water
A couple of water bottles and some prepackaged snacks should do. You’ll want to put non-perishables if possible, and replace every 6-12 months, depending on the expiration.

Distractions
I find that giving your toddler free reign over the distractions can lead to boredom rather quickly. Instead, pull out one distraction every thirty minutes or every hour (whatever your kiddo can handle). Actively engage with them while they play. This can alleviate worries they may have while the power is out, and it gives you something to focus on while you wait.

Why is an Emergency Kit Important?
Keeping your kiddos distracted and calm during an emergency situation is not only a practical idea, but a matter of safety. Your child may want to go run around outside when there is a tornado headed your way, but it’s just not safe.
However, kids aren’t exactly known for wanting to sit quietly and let you think. So using an emergency kit is a great way to keep their energy focused so that you can keep them safe until power returns.
When to Use an Emergency Kid Kit
The emergency kid kit is great for power outages, but can also be used in inclement weather. It can also be handy if you need to evacuate quickly. It will give your kiddo something to do while being stuck in the car or at a shelter.
Tips for Making the Kit Last
Use natural light when possible
That means don’t use glow sticks and head lamps during the day.
Keep busy
Tell stories, build a fort, play a game, go outside if it is safe to do so.
Don’t mindlessly snack
You (should) have other food in your house that doesn’t need to be cooked. The emergency food should only be used if you cannot get to it or need to leave the house.
Where to Keep the Emergency Kit
We have an area in our laundry room where we keep emergency supplies. This includes candles, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit. I keep my son’s emergency kid kit next to those items so that they are all within reach. This makes grabbing them when you are in a hurry much easier. Stay tuned for my post on having an emergency car kit.
This DIY Emergency Kid Kit is practical for a few hours or maybe even overnight. If you feel that your family’s safety is in danger, evacuate if possible and notify authorities of your situation. I sincerely hope you never have to use this kit, but I am so glad we have had it in the past. Stay safe out there!
