How to Save Money on Children’s Clothing

When it comes to children’s clothing, it can be easy to hand over waaaayyyy too much for those adorable little rompers or toddler-sized sunglasses. Today I am going to be sharing my favorite ways to save money on children’s clothing.

With a bit of planning ahead, you can often get your child’s clothing at deep discounts. Plus, some of these tips work for adult clothing too! As we gear up for fall (and the impending school year), keep in mind these tips to save money on your child’s clothing!

Shop Deals & Sales

If a store is having a BOGO event, it is a great time to stock up on clothing your kiddo is going to need. If a store is offering an online only sale, it is a good idea to grab stuff while it is on sale.

These events happen often and you simply have to check periodically to see when a store is having a sale. Some of the best times to buy children’s clothing are during New Year’s sales, Memorial Day sales, and Labor Day sales.

Take Advantage of Tax Free Periods

Many states offer tax free weekends (or longer!) for school supplies and clothing. I love using this ‘holiday’ to purchase items we need at a lower rate! You can check out this website to find your state. Keep in mind that not all states participate, and the holidays may vary from year to year.

Shop Second Hand

Buying from consignment shops is a great way to save money on children’s clothing. Not only are the prices lower, but some clothing doesn’t even get worn before it is donated!

Plus, children sometimes go through growth spurts, which means clothing is less likely to be worn out or have holes. Be sure to check for stains, especially when looking at baby and toddler clothing.

Sell Items in Good Condition

While you’re at the consignment shop, sell the clothes your child is no longer wearing! Getting money back from clothes you were going to get rid of anyway feels like saving money to me!

This has two purposes.

1: It declutters your house, which is always nice. Check out my post on how to declutter your kid’s stuff for more ideas.

2: It extends the life of that clothing, meaning less waste in landfills. Yay for wasting less!

Look for Coupons

Check the paper or look online for coupons or discount codes. These codes can help you save money on your children’s clothing with very little extra effort put in.

You can also use apps like Ibotta to save on online purchases.

Buy Out of Season

This is probably my favorite way to save money on children’s clothing! In late winter/spring, you can find great discounts on winter coats and boots. Just size up one (or even a few!) sizes on items that your child will eventually need.

Anywhere from August to October, you can find discounted deals on shorts, sandals, and tanks.

Although some children’s clothing is trendy, for the most part, their clothing is evergreen. Get items at a discount by shopping for children’s clothing out of season!

PS: This also works on adult clothing. Jackets go on sale when the weather warms, and stores don’t want to house bathing suits in November. Unless you live in Florida, but you get the idea.

Buy in Bulk

When shopping for babies and toddlers especially, there are tons of great deals if you buy multi-packs of items. Check out my go-to toddler clothes below:

Simple Joys Girls 3 Pack Knit Shorts

Gerber Girls Sleeveless Onesie Multipacks

Shop at Discount Stores

Check out discount stores in your area. Many have name brand clothing at lower prices. Places like Ross, TJ Maxx, or Marshall’s are great places to start. You can even look into non-chain stores in your area. You never know unless you stop in!
